My Korean Make-Up Haul

I recently went on a trip to South Korea and obviously, make-up shopping is something I couldn’t miss. I mean, how could I forget it when everywhere I go they sell make-up and skin care products. Cosmetics go way back in Korea; history now tells us that it all started during the Three Kingdoms (57 B.C. – 668) and peaked during the Goryeo Period (918-1392) when people were already interested in self-grooming and beautification. During the Joseon Period (1392-1897), some of the make-up practices were restricted since a clean face was considered beautiful due to Confucianism’s emphasis on being thrift and modest, and that inner beauty is more important than the outer beauty. Ever since the beginning, up until today, one practice has been well passed on, and that is the use of more natural ingredients to keep the skin looking good, not only on the outside but also on the inside. Another fun fact that I learned was that, eyebrows were already a big thing since the Goryeo Period, they considered it as their most important feature and used eyebrow ink made from plant ash to emphasize them.

So here the things I got while I was there, most of these I got from Myeongdong since I allotted one day just for shopping in Myeongdong alone. As you can see, I more of a lipstick person since I don’t really know how to put make-up on my eyes…yet *wink*.

Chateau Labiotte Wine Lip Tints

If you love wine and lipsticks, well, this is must-have for you. According to its description, “A long finishing lip tint containing extracts from France premium wine for a stronger moisturizing and covering effect.“. For quite some time before I arrived in Korea, it was widely raved about not only in Korea (*it was featured in EXO’s song “Lotto”) but also in the U.S and here in the Philippines. That’s why I made it a point to get a bunch of these in different shades. Let me tell you, the consistency might look watery, but they are super pigmented and their lasting power is amazing, after I washed my arm and scrubbed it, it’s still there!

Forencos Glam Allure Lip Crayon

As I was getting lost in the streets of Myeongdong, I found this store with a huge face of Song Joong Ki. Of course, the fan girl inside of me couldn’t resist, so I went in and at first I thought that they purely sold men’s skincare but the lady dragged me to the lipstick areas and told me I needed one (I might have looked too haggard that night), so I tried one on and it led me to buying an entire set. I liked it because it glided smoothly on my lips, it was a bit creamy but the right kind of creamy. The lasting power is almost the same as the Wine Lip Tints and throughout the day, I notice that it doesn’t make your lips dry.

Laneige Two Tone Lip Bar

This product rose to fame after Song Hye Kyo was seen using it in the drama Descendants of the Sun and then it got a following when Lee Sung Kyung used it in Doctors. Achieving the gradient lip is easier when using this, since it instantly gives you two shades at one swipe!

I forgot to take the photo *oops* but it’ the 2 white ones in the background. For a closer look, here’s a photo:

3ce Style Nanda Eye Shadow in Valenti – love the color but the glitters are too big 🙁

Skin Food Peach Sake Pore Pact – I use this to set my BB cream or foundation, it smells really nice and it’s not cakey. Love!

blush powder

As I forgot to individual photos of the other products *sorry again* I’ll just link them here 🙂

3CE Style Nanda Cream Blusher in Coral Coral – Very very very pigmented!

Etude House Lash Perm Curl Fix Mascara – Makes my lashes longer and it’s waterproof. Lasting power is insane! I had a hard time removing it the next day.

Etude House Drawing Eye Brow in #3 – My everyday eyebrow product, very affordable and easy to use since it is retractable

Etude House Color My Brows in #4 Natural Brown – Whenever I find my eyebrow pencil is too dark for me, I use this to lighten my brows and also, to set them in place 🙂

Skin Food Wedge Puff – Love love this! It doesn’t eat up the product!

The Face Shop Touch My Lip Liner in Wonder Coral – works as good as a Kylie Lipliner, bad side is that it melts easily 🙁

Travel Tips to Myeongdong:

  1. Don’t get too excited, you might lose it! Honestly, Myeongdong is like make-up and skincare heaven, everywhere you look, the flashing lights and cute colors will attract you. Know what you want to avoid overspending!
  2. Speaking of overspending, it’s easy to overspend in Korea, since the currency is big, once you get your Won, you’ll feel like a millionaire instantly. When you’re in Myeongdong, learn to control your money and listen carefully to what the saleslady will say, because she will be offering you a lot of products even when you’re just looking for one kind.
  3. Salesladies will grab you inside their store! I swear, this happened to me while I was standing outside Holika Holika. I was just waiting for my cousin and suddenly a girl grabs me out of nowhere, literally, GRABS ME FORCEFULLY, gives me freestuff and leaves me inside the store. Good thing is that, they didn’t force me to buy anything, I think the lady has quota or something like that, she just needed me to go inside since it was already near closing time.

So, that’s it! Those were my make-up purchases from Korea. I hope you liked reading through my short reviews. Personally, I prefer buying skin care than make-up because I always have a hard time choosing the shades but then again, as they say, it takes practice and self-control (not to go loco over the hundreds of shades! Haha!). I’ll be posting my Korean Skin Care Haul next and my travel posts from Korea. Stay tuned!
